Just the facts
Day 3: Pamplona to Puenta la Reina
Distance: 16.5 miles/27 km
Time: 5.5 hours
Total to date: 42 miles/68 km
Aches and pains: One hot spot on one foot. No blisters.
Talk about a change. Today’s hike was dry, sunny, hot and free of mud. The climb to Alto del Perdon was okay, though looking up at the ridge from Pamplona made it appear daunting at first. I had to pause a couple of times to catch my breath because the trail seemed to go up, up, up. Once on the ridge the views from the top were stunning, making the climb well worth the effort.
The highlight of the hike was the iron sculpture of medieval pilgrims crossing over Alto del Perdon. Perched on the ridge, the pilgrims and their animals are struggling to make headway in strong winds. Not surprising since there are windmills all along the ridge. It was even more special because my husband had made a farewell card for me using an online photo of the same sculpture. He’d secretly slipped the card in my backpack when we parted in Toulouse.
When I put my shoes on this morning they were still wet. Fingers crossed that tomorrow is a blister-free day.
