I met a New York policeman at dinner tonight. He said he didn’t know how he was going to finish the Camino because he had a blisters on this toes. I told him he would make it — just two more days. He said he was physically fit, had already walked three days and it killed him, all uphill and downhill. The hills just didn’t end.

The guy finished his ham and eggs, got up and looked around for a cab to take him back to his Albuquerque. (The word is albergue, pronounced al-bear-gay). I ask which one he’s staying at and it’s the Albuquerque that’s 200 meters, about 650 feet, down the hill. I ask how many cabs he has seen around town.

The last I saw of the cop he was standing on the street corner waiting for a cab to miraculously appear.

That was three hours ago and I’m still laughing!

A little Camino training: sometimes the directionals aren’t so easy to find, sometimes the direction isn’t so clear.
