Day 9: A hill of a day.

Just the facts
Day 9: Villafranca Montes de Oca to Cardenuela
Distance: 15.5 miles / 25 km
Time: 5 hours
Total to date: 156.5 miles/252 km
Aches and pains: The ball of one foot aches and one toe is is swollen and painful. No blisters.

Last night I looked at the elevation map for today’s hike: three steep hills in quick succession. The first hill began just ten or twelve steps from the back door of the albergue so there wasn’t even a chance to convince my muscles that they needed to be on their best behavior!

I was slow on the uphills and told Emil to go on ahead but he chose to stay with me. Our third and final hill looked like a goat path, all slippery striated rock at odd angles.
